Abstract
The article presents the biography of Marian Turski, a Holocaust survivor, social activist, and one of the central figures of post‑war Polish‑Jewish public life. It traces his trajectory from childhood in Łódź, through his experiences in the ghetto, Auschwitz, and Buchenwald, to his post‑war engagement in building the People’s Republic of Poland and his later disillusionment with communism. The text examines the evolution of Turski’s identity, his journalistic career, and his contribution to the development of research and public history concerning Polish Jews, including his key role in establishing major institutions of memory such as the POLIN Museum. Particular attention is devoted to his work as an advocate of Polish‑Jewish and Polish‑German dialogue and to his public interventions, especially the “Eleventh Commandment” urging vigilance against hatred and violations of human rights. The article also highlights Turski’s significance as a witness to history who consistently opposed forgetting and the trivialization of the Holocaust. Taken together, his life and work emerge as an example of ethical commitment and responsibility for historical memory.
