Abstract
The Elie Wiesel National Institute for Holocaust Studies in Romania (Institutul National pentru Studierea Holocaustului din România „Elie Wiesel”, INSHR) 1, based in Bucharest, was established by the Romanian government in 2005 following the positive findings of the “Final Report” of the International Commission for the Study of the Holocaust in Romania, chaired by Elie Wiesel. The Institute is a public institution with legal personality and is subordinate to the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage. It was established to identify, collect, record, research, and publish documentation regarding the Holocaust in Romania, Moldova, parts of Ukraine (territories under Romanian administration during World War II), and northern Transylvania (Romanian territories then under Hungarian jurisdiction), as well as to implement a comprehensive educational program. To this end, researchers at the institute conduct research on the Holocaust in Romania, acquire and preserve relevant documents, organize seminars and conferences, and publish scholarly articles and books.
