Memory of the Holocaust in Moldova

Abstract
W Mołdawii problem pamięci o Holokauście związany jest z pytaniem o tożsamość, a w związku z tym – z różnymi narracjami historycznymi. Z kolei zagadnienia tej pamięci i tutejszej tożsamości wiążą się ściśle z historią Rumunii, dlatego w artykule mowa będzie także o tym kraju.
Mołdawia podzielała całkowicie sowiecką narrację o drugiej wojnie światowej, ale niezależnie od tego występowały tu swoiste aspekty albo elementy narodowe. W czasie swojej historii była kolejno częścią imperium osmańskiego, Cesarstwa Rosyjskiego, Królestwa Rumunii i ZSRR. Od 1991 r. Mołdawia jest krajem niezależnym. W latach 1941–1944 obszary obecnego państwa zostały zajęte przez armię rumuńską pod dowództwem Iona Antonescu, sojusznika Hitlera. Holokaust na tych terenach dokonał się przede wszystkim jej rękoma. Liczni mołdawscy Żydzi, podobnie jak Żydzi rumuńscy i Romowie, byli deportowani na tereny Transnistrii, której znaczna część należy obecnie do Ukrainy, i tam zostali zgładzeni w obozach koncentracyjnych. Większość zmarła na skutek różnorodnych chorób lub była rozstrzelana w drodze do obozów, zjawisko to określa się jako Holokaust od kuli (Holocaust by bullets). W 1940 r. na terytorium Besarabii żyło około 350 tys. Żydów, z których, według mołdawsko-amerykańskiego historyka Vladimira Solonariego2, przeżyło około 90 tys. Szef nazistowskiej propagandy Joseph Goebbels pisał w swoich pamiętnikach, że z antysemickim nastawieniem i chęcią mordu Żydów Antonescu nie mogli równać się nawet naziści: „Trzeba przyznać, że jeśli chodzi o problem żydowski, to tacy ludzie jak Antonescu działają o wiele radykalniej niż my”
