Survival Strategies and Ways of Helping Jewish Spouses in Mixed Marriages in Wrocław and Hamburg. A case study

katharina-friedla@web.de Author BiographyPhD, a graduate of history, Jewish studies and Eastern European studies at Freie Universität in Berlin. She defended her doctorate at the Faculty of History and Jewish Studies at the University of Basel (doctoral dissertation: "Jewish Worlds in Breslau and Wrocław, 1933–1945: Survival Strategies, Assertiveness and Identity. The Experience of the Holocaust"). In the years 2004–2012 she conducted reserach activities, e.g., for Stiftung Denkmal für die ermordeten Juden Europas Berlin, Freie Universität Berlin, Department of History University of London, Deutsches Historisches Museum Berlin. Translator from Yiddish, Russian and Polish. She completed research internships at Yad Vashem in Jerusalem, at the Leo Baeck Institute and at the YIVO Jewish Research Institute in New York, at the University of Haifa and at the Wiesenthal Institute in Vienna. Her research interests include the history of Jews in Central and Eastern Europe, Polish and German-Jewish relations in the 20th century.

Abstract
This article presents the complexity of life of mixed married couples in two large cities, Wrocław and Hamburg, during the Third Reich. The stories of six mixed families outline the issue of help provided to Jews by their non-Jewish spouses. Each case is analysed in terms of the survival strategy, the changing family constellations, the methods and possibilities of provision of help, and the dangers and dilemmas faced by the families of the mixed married couples.
